During a lifetime of exposure to the sun and other environmental elements our skin puts up a good fight as our bodies' protective layer, and unfortunately this can eventually take a toll on how our skin looks and feels. Fortunately, there are several measures we can take that will help renew well-worn and weathered skin and reverse some of the damage we have sustained, particularly due to years of catching harmful ultraviolet rays

Use a good sunscreen every day

The first step, recommended by dermatologists, is to use a good sunscreen everyday. This means a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, even on cloudy days when invisible UV rays are less evident. Sunscreen should be reapplied every one and a half hours during prolonged exposure, and the first application should be made half an hour before going out into the sun, in order to give the skin time to absorb the lotion. Sunscreen needs to be applied liberally and evenly in order to form an effective protective coating.

There are a variety of sunscreen products available today. In order to block both harmful types of rays, a "broad spectrum" sunscreen is required. This includes both the SPF to protect against UVB, and ingredients such as avobenzone, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide, to block the deeper-penetrating UVA rays. Remember, regular use of an SPF 15 product counts for more over the long term than infrequent use of a higher SPF. When it comes to your skin, daily care is the key.

Even with diligent sunscreen use, gone are the days of basking on the beach or in your backyard. Following years of research and advancements in the understanding of skin health and safety, exposing your skin to the sun for the purpose of tanning is never recommended. Especially during the sun's peak hours (between 10am and 4pm), additional methods of protection from the sun's rays are always a good idea, including a hat and long-sleeved protective clothing (something with a tighter knit than a t-shirt), heading for the shade of a tree or umbrella, and wearing ultraviolet-blocking sunglasses. Also be aware that the use of other products such as insect repellants and cosmetics can interfere with sunscreen's efficacy, as can sweating, swimming or just dashing through the sprinkler for some quick relief on a hot day.

For a healthy glow without the risks of damaging sun exposure, maintain an active lifestyle, drink plenty of water and eat a well balanced diet. Another safer alternative to sunbathing is self-tanning lotions if you can't go without that golden or bronze tint. However, the degree of tan deemed desirable is largely a result of social conditioning and fashion fads, so as awareness grows perhaps we will see a return to a slightly paler complexion as acceptable.

Alpha Hydroxy (Glycolic Acid) products replenish cells

A second possibility for creating and maintaining younger looking skin is the use of alpha hydroxy acids. A natural component of fruit and milk sugars, such as glycolic acid derived from sugar cane, these products are used to rejuvenate the skin with their exfoliating properties which allow for easy removal of dead skin cells. In this way, ongoing use has been shown to improve skin's overall appearance and reverse sun damage by replenishing cells and potentially encouraging new growth of collagen and elastin. However, the use of alpha hydroxy acids makes new skin more susceptible to new damage and may lead to an overall increase in sun sensitivity, so they must be used in conjunction with good sun protection.

Although they are derived from natural products, alpha hydroxy acids do need to be used with care. Concentration of ingredients plays a major role in both product effectiveness and the way sensitive skin may react, so it is always a good idea to consult a physician or skin care professional before beginning a new form of treatment. As a general guideline, the FDA recommends an AHA concentration of 10 per cent or less, and a pH of 3.5 or more. Do a little research, and rely on the experts in order to find the skin care best suited to your particular needs. Seeking professional consultation may even save you money in the long run, as opposed to embarking on an extensive trial and error system that may never give you quite the results you are looking for.

Retin A (Vitamin A) can reverse skin aging

Another strategy for reversing the skin's aging process is the use of vitamin A derived products, such as Retin-A. Similar to AHA's, Retin-A stimulates skin cell turnover with the visible result of peeling, so it must also be used with good moisturizers and SPF protection. The removal of old skin improves skin texture, and helps reduce fine lines and age spots. Retin-A also helps stimulate the production of collagen, creating new tissue and renewing skin's elasticity.

There are several reasons to consult with a physician or dermatologist when using Vitamin A derived medications, one of which is the risk of birth defects, so it is essential that women follow a physician's advice and avoid use if there is any chance of becoming pregnant. Furthermore, the concentrations required for optimal results are typically higher than those found in cosmetic products, so professional prescription is required.

Protecting and caring for your skin is an important part of looking and feeling your best as you go about your daily routine. Prevention of future damage is an ongoing endeavor, and your best bet as an effective solution to premature aging. However, with all the products and skincare tips on the market today there are numerous options for restoring your skin's youthfulness. If you are still perplexed by the plethora of anti wrinkle creams on the shelf, consult the experts to put your mind at rest and give your skin the pampering it deserves. Investigate the options available to determine what works best for you, and put your best face forward.
