The Soleo Story

A qualified naturopath, Leo Fung, developed and formulated the original Soléo sunscreen formula in 1999 offering consumers a natural alternative to toxic and synthetic-based sunscreens. Since that time Fung has collaborated with other experts internationally to improve this naturally sourced and organic suncare technology. His on-going research and development  has resulted in the commercial release in August 2005 of the very latest version of his sunscreen– Soléo Organics.

This new and improved formula provides SPF 30+, broadspectrum, 3-hour water resistant protection without the use of chemical UV-absorbers, titanium dioxide or synthetic preservatives. Soleo Organics sunscreen is formulated with all-natural and organic ingredients and fortified with botanical extracts that will moisturize and provide exceptional skin health.

Soléo Organics includes a special form of "microfine" zinc oxide -- translated this means it will not leave your skin ghostly white like common zinc does. Zinc oxide is now considered the single best broadspectrum natural sunscreen (protecting from UV A and UV B rays)

With the release of this Soleo Organic Natural Sunscreen, Soléo continues to be the world front-leader in providing the most technologically advanced natural organic sunscreen available on the market today.

Soleo Organics Sunscreen Ingredient Facts

Zinc oxide: -- We use a non nano particle coated Zinc Oxide that is not photoreactive and will not produce hydroxyl ions (free radicals). We do not use traditional zinc coatings like dimethicone, aluminium, or sulphurs. Soleo uses only natural ingredients in all aspects of production and our zinc is coated with derivatives of coconut oil. Our zinc does not absorb into the bloodstream and effect serum zinc levels. Zinc assists in the growth and repair of the skin tissue. Zinc is the only sunscreen ingredient that offers comprehensive protection from the full spectrum of UV light, namely UV A, UV B and UV C. Unlike Titanium, Zinc is a true physical sunscreen, reflecting UV light and not absorbing it.

Grapeseed oil (Vitis vinifera): Promotes cellular growth and repair.  Protects against and may reduce melanoma. Increases Vitamin D production and is a powerful anti-oxidant. This oil is thought to have more anti-oxidant power than Vitamin C, E and Beta-Carotene. Grapeseed Oil is a polyunsaturated oil that is rich in linoleic acid. At 68 – 76%, it contains the highest amounts of linoleic acid among any oil or food  source. One of two essential fatty acids that the human body can not produce. One tablespoon of Grapeseed Oil provides nearly the recommended daily allowance for Vitamin E. Grapeseed Oil contains Vitamin E, and a group of bioflavonoids known as procyanadins. Acne prevention, moisture reduction, anti-inflammatory. Sunflower seed oil (Helianthus annus): Excellent source of Vit E, with magnesium and selenium. Sunflower oil has been used as an ingredient in cosmetic products for years. One of its main benefits as a skin care solution is its ability to help the skin retain moisture. Millions of people either apply it directly onto their skin, or use cosmetic products that contain sunflower oil, to avoid excess dryness. Of the 3 types, only high oleic oil can be used effectively in cosmetic formulations that sit on store shelves. It contains ample amounts of vitamin E and high levels of the essential fatty acids (or, polyunsaturated fats) which our body needs. Sunflower oil is high in the essential vitamin E and low in saturated fat. High oleic sunflower oils are classified as having monounsaturated levels of 80% and above.

Capric/caprylic triglyceride: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, derived from coconut oil is a mixed triester of caprylic and capric acids, is a highly refined medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil possessing excellent oxidation stability with an almost indefinite shelf life. CCT is a desirable emollient with quick skin penetration and has no color, odor or taste. Great as a dispersing agent and useful as a solvent for vitamins and actives. an emollient derived from coconut oil that is also used to disperse pigment in cosmetics. Capric acid is a crystalline fatty acid found in the fats and oils of a large group of plants. Both of these forms of triglycerides act as an emollient and a barrier agent to help bind water in the skin.

Vegetable oils: The vegetable oils contain ALA (alpha lipoid acid) one of the three omega 3 fatty acids that needs to be converted into EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) fats to be absorbed by our cells. Though the breaking down of ALA into EPA and DHA takes time, it is usually sufficient to fulfill the omega 3 needs of most people. Canola oil contains both omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids in a ratio of 2:1. This is an ideal ratio between unsaturated and saturated fats and can be used to correct the imbalance in our diets. Canola oil is a heart-healthy oil and can be used regularly. Soybean Oil (organic) as we know is extracted from soybeans which are a rich source of omega fatty acids. Soybean oil has high omega 6 and omega 3 content. However, to ensure the maximum benefits of this oil, you must use it in the unrefined state only. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and vegetable oils are a major dietary source of this vitamin. Each fatty acid also has its own specific properties. Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid with cholesterol-lowering properties and a-linolenic acid is also linked to heart health. Ricinoleic acid is the active ingredient in castor oil and is a powerful stimulant laxative, whilst γ-linolenic acid provides the main benefits of evening primrose oil, used among other things, to treat breast pain and atopic eczema. Phytosterols are found in vegetable oils, particularly germ oils. It is now also suggested that natural levels of phytosterols found in many vegetable oils (maize oil: 968mg/100g, wheat germ oil: 553mg/100g and olive oil: 221mg/100g) may also make a significant contribution to cholesterol lowering.

Macadamia oil (Macadamia ternifolia): It is high in monounsaturated fatty acids, and closely resembles sebum (the oil naturally produced by ones skin to help protect it). Nourishes the skin and locks in moisture, replenishes fatty acids, prevents and reduces the signs of ageing.

Macadamia Nut Oil is more stable than almost all other vegetable oils due to low levels of poly-unsaturated fatty acids. This oil has rapid skin penetration, leaves a velvety feel, has an amazing benefit for the skin and has proven itself to be one of the best regenerative oils available. Macadamia oil is a fabulous, protective oil with a high absorption rate and has been successfully used as a healing oil for scars, sunburns, minor wounds and other irritations. Macadamia Oil is an ideal anti-ageing supplement for cosmetics, due to its high content of palmitoleic acid (cishexadec-9-enoic acid), which is an essential component of human sebum, which is lost with ageing. Human skin lipids contain 22% palmitoleic acid isomer (cishexadec-6-enoic acid) which along with palmitic acid comprise around half the skin lipid content. Its action is thought to be a combination of lubrication, softening and protection of the protein structures and prevention of moisture loss from the skin. As the production of palmitoleic acid in sebum decreases with ageing, it makes perfect sense to use Macadamia Oil as the principal cosmetic oil in skin care emulsions. Macadamia Oil is over 80% mono-unsaturated, and exhibits one of the highest levels of oxidative stability of any unmodified vegetable oil. With the addition of tocopherols, the stability is enhanced to that of castor and coconut oils, making it ideal for most skin care and cosmetic applications with a superior skin feel.

Bee’s wax (Cera alba): Bees wax is used in emulsifying lotions, balms and salves.

Cupuaçu seed butter (Theobroma Grandiflorum): The seeds contain a semi-solid triglyceride that helps increase skin hydration and reduce transepidermal water loss. Cupuaçu also contains phytosterols which exert anti-inflammatory action in skin by acting as free radical scavengers, essential fatty acids omegas 3 and 6., and high contents of antioxidant vitamins C and A, same found on Shea Butter. Due to its capacity for water absorption and the ability to obstruct the evaporation of moisture from the skin, it offers powerful moisturizing benefits helping restore the skin's natural humidity and elasticity. Cupuacu fruit is high in vitamin C and polyphenols, including a unique type of polyphenols called theograndins. Capuacu fruit is rich in antioxidants. The Cupuaçu fruit contains another type of antioxidant phytonutrients called polyphenols (green tea and grape seeds). Theograndins have potent antioxidant activity, and therefore provide cardiovascular protective and immune supportive benefits. In tests on particular cancer lines, theograndins were uniquely effective at killing colon cancer cells. Cupuaçu fruit contains at least nine other previously known antioxidants, including vitamin C and vitamin A, making it a well-rounded antioxidant cocktail in and of itself.

Green tea leaf extract (Camellia sinensis): One of the most powerful anti-oxidants in the world. 1997 research suggests that concentrations of topically applied green tea extract provided nearly total anti-cancer protection. It is anti-inflammatory and a natural disinfectant. Green tea, recognized worldwide for its therapeutic properties, contains powerful flavonoids called catechins. The main catechins in green tea include gallocatechin (GC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin (EC), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The chief catechin in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory, cholesterol lowering, fat burning and other beneficial properties. Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols.

Chamomile flower extract (Anthemis nobilis): Chamomile’s anti-inflammatory nature will soothe redness and itching, reduce swelling and heat associated with dermatitis and prevent inflammation and negative reactions due to irritating cosmetics. Its antiseptic qualities destroy bacteria, and the plant’s anodyne–which is similar to an analgesic–relieves pain. The herb’s vasoconstrictive abilities aid the narrowing and healing of unsightly facial capillaries. The main effects of Roman Chamomile include being antispasmodic, calming to the central nervous system; anti-inflammatory, calming to the stomach, anti-allergic, and relieves symptoms related to shock. Chamomile is non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitizing Lecithin: Lecithin is an important phospholipid needed by all living cells. Lecithin is produced within our own bodies, and can be found in the major organs: the heart, the liver, and the kidneys. Lecithin aids in maintaining our overall health and is utilized by every cell in our bodies. Lecithin contains phosphatidylcholine (PC) which the main ingredient assumed to be responsible for its medicinal effect. PC is part of the actual membrane that surrounds the cell. Once PC is ingested in the body through lecithin-containing foods or supplements, it is broken down by the body into choline which is vital for the proper functioning of the brain.

Safflower seed oil (Carthamus tinctorius): Safflower Oil serves as a botanical alternative to mineral oil and other synthetic ester emollients. It is high in Linoleic acid, which is beneficial for the treatment of dry skin. It contains more poly-unsaturated acids than any other vegetable oil, safflower oil is hydrating to the skin and consists of linoleic acid triglycerides. The chief interest in Safflower Oil lies in the fact that it contains about 75% Linoleic Acid, with total unsaturated acids of about 94%. A number of medical research organizations have reported that the principle ingredient of Safflower Oil, Linoleic Glyceride, is beneficial in controlling or perhaps preventing arteriosclerosis.

Cucumber fruit extract (Cucumis sativus): Cucumber extract has many benefits for the skin, both strong moisturizing abilities as well as mild astringent effects. Cucumber extract is soothing, helps revitalise and relieve the puffiness of the skin. It also helps remove dead skin cells and tightens skin.. Cucumbers soothe skin irritations, prevent water retention and are rich in water, fibre and beneficial minerals. As cucumber and the skin share the same level of hydrogen, it becomes easy for cucumber to mask all the problem areas. Cucumber also contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both of which soothe skin irritations. These two acid compounds prevent water retention, which is why cucumbers applied topically are helpful for swollen eyes, burns and dermatitis. Its hard skin is rich in fibre and contains a variety of beneficial minerals, including silica, potassium and magnesium. The silica in cucumber is an essential component of healthy connective tissues, which include muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone. This is why beauty experts recommend drinking cucumber juice as a source of silica to improve the complexion and health of the skin.

Natural vitamin E (d-alpha tocopheryl ): Protects body tissues from breakdown and signs of photo ageing. It is an excellent moisturiser and has scar healing qualities. Protects cell membranes and other fat-soluble parts of the body, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from damage. It also protects the body against cardiovascular disease and certain forms of cancer and has demonstrated immune-enhancing effects. Vitamin E may also help protect skin from ultraviolet radiation and sunburns. Vitamin e lotions provide some benefit in preventing and treating sunburns. These lotions protect the epidermis layer of the skin from early stages of ultra violet light damage. Vitamin e preparations also increase the effectiveness of sunscreens. Such lotions do not work immediately. They must be applied about 20 minutes before sun exposure in order to allow the vitamin e to be absorbed deep into the epidermis layer. Vitamin e also helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks, prevents age spots, maintains the skin’s oil balance and reduces transepidermal water loss from skin and strengthens the skin’s barrier function.

Candelilla Cera (Euphorbia cerifera): Candelilla wax is a natural vegetable wax which is hard, brittle, slightly tacky and light yellow in color. It is used in many cosmetic applications when the product requires a good glide property. Because of its high ester, fatty acid and resin properties it is one of the best suited ingredients for increasing the protective coating on cosmetic applications.

What is microfine zinc?

Soléo Organics sunscreens use micronised zinc oxide rather than the ultrafine nano-particles that are used by some companies.

The zinc oxide we use is completely naturally processed with no chemicals used in the process of purification.  It is simply physically milled into a fine powder and dispersed evenly to ensure optimal protection in the product.

For zinc to be absorbed into the body the particle size would have to be less than 100 nanometers. Soleo's particle size is well over 100 nanometers so there is no absorption into the blood stream.

Also FOE.org (Friends of the Earth) Soleo is listed as one of the few nano-free companies.

Is it safe to use on babies?

Of course, it is always best to keep babies out of the sun as much as possible. However for times when that isn't possible, we feel our sunscreen is the best alternative for your baby.  Because we have no chemical UV-absorbers, synthetic preservatives, petroleum by-products or essential oils in our sunscreen it is ideal for sensitive young skin.

We just recommend for the first time you use it to try a test patch on your baby - this is good to do with any new product that you use on your baby, just to be cautious.

Is it good for sensitive skin?

Soléo Organics was designed for sensitive skin as all potential irritants, such as chemical uv-absorbers, synthetic preservatives, artificial fragrances, petroleum by-products and essential oils have been excluded.

However, we always recommend people who tend to be allergy-prone to do a test patch first (as with any new products they are using).

Is it suitable for pregnant women?

Yes.

What testing has been done on Soléo Organics?

The Soléo Organics formula has been tested for SPF, water resistance and broadspectrum protection. Tests showed that it was SPF30+ for up to 3 hours in the water and offered very good broad-spectrum protection.  Each batch of sunscreen is then tested to confirm that it passes specification.

Standard microbiological and stability testing has also been conducted on the sunscreen.  The shelf life of the sunscreen is 2 years.

Why don’t you use chemical UV-absorbers?

Chemical UV-absorbers are absorbed very easily into the body and into the bloodstream. We have chosen not to use chemical UV-absorbers in our formula due to international medical research articles that have shown some chemical UV-absorbers have the potential to cause health problems.  There is a medical research website that you might like to visit called http://www.sunscreenresearch.com/ - this outlines various research paper abstracts that have been published in medical journals about the concerns of common sunscreen chemical UV-absorbers.

Chemical sunscreens also have the potential to cause allergic dermatitis and also photoallergic dermatitis. (Photo-allergic dermatitis differs from allergic dermatitis, as the irritation occurs only after the skin comes into direct exposure with the combination of the allergic substance and sunlight.) Physical sunscreens like zinc oxide do not cause this problem.

Why don’t you use synthetic preservatives?

Synthetic preservatives are absorbed very easily into the body and into the bloodstream. We have chosen not to use synthetic preservatives due to international medical research articles that have shown some synthetic preservatives have the potential cause health problems.  Many synthetic preservatives are also skin irritants and can cause itching, burning, redness and/ or swelling of the skin, as well as eczema and acne breakouts.

Why don’t you use titanium dioxide?

Titanium dioxide is absorbed very easily into the body and into the bloodstream.  We have chosen not to use chemical UV-absorbers in our formula due to international medical research articles that have shown that titanium dioxide has the potential to cause health problems.  There is a medical research website that you might like to visit called http://www.sunscreenresearch.com/ - this outlines various research paper abstracts that have been published in medical journals about the concerns of common sunscreen chemical UV-absorbers.

What does SPF mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF numbers are an approximate indication of how much protection from the sun the product will provide for your skin.

For any exposure time an SPF30 sunscreen has approximately double the protection time of an SPF15 sunscreen.

ie. For an average person (skin burns after 10 minutes in the sun)

SPF30 = 300 minutes before burning

SPF15 = 150 minutes before burning

What does Broadspectrum mean?

A sunscreen offers broadspectrum protection when it protects against UV-A and UV-B rays.

In the past, UV-B rays were regarded as the main cause of skin cancer. However, the University of Sydney has shown that UV-A radiation plays a large role in causing gene mutations that can lead to skin cancer.  Therefore it is vital that when using a sunscreen you check that it offers broad-spectrum protection.
